Gorgeous beach destination wedding of Alex & Taylor in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca (Mexico)

Here is a photo story of a beautiful celebration of love between Alex & Taylor in Puerto Escondido (Oaxaca, Mexico), that we were lucky to witness as their wedding photographers.

There are few couples that between us the wedding vendors here in Mexico, we call “mi pareja consentida”, referring to the special connection that happens there making it to the list of the “Best Weddings ever”. That means that everyone is enjoying their time, the couple has 100% trust in what we do, and everything just flows like a mountain river: beautiful moments, beautiful people, beautiful love and emotions…and beautiful wedding photos and videos, too :)

Alex and Taylor live in Queretaro, Mexico and already were in love with Puerto Escondido before choosing it as their wedding destination, which made their decision of where to get married very easy:

“Puerto Escondido is a very special place to us. It’s our go-to beach in Mexico when we want to get away and disconnect. We decided to have our wedding there because we wanted to share our favorite Mexican beach town with our friends and family. When many people think of a beach vacation in Mexico, they think of a resort experience in a place like Puerto Vallarta or Cancun. That’s just not our scene. We fell in love with the relaxed and friendly vibe of Puerto Escondido & knew our guests would love it too.”

The decision on the wedding venue (Beach Club Cocos / Posada Real Hotel) also had its “why”:

“Club de Playa Cocos was the perfect venue because it was both beautiful and secluded. Essentially, we had the whole beach to ourselves. The staff was incredibly professional & made our wedding a celebration that our guests are still talking about.”

Wedding day with the ocean view

The day started with the getting ready moments of the bride and groom, with their closest family and friends. But what happened then, was one of the most original “first looks” ideas we’ve had (when the guys shared this concept with me on the phone, I went “Eeeh?” but followed by “Sure, that’s so original, let’s do it!”):

Instead of a “first look,” we decided to do a “first touch.” It helped to calm our nerves before the ceremony, but we still got the “wow” moment when we saw each other at the altar. Plus, we love how the photos turned out!

That moment was followed by a gorgeous beach ceremony with the Pacific sunset as the background. What would be a beach wedding in Mexico without a couples love story on the beach, and a family session afterwards? That was so much fun!

It was a micro wedding, and the reception table was beautifully set up for everyone to sit together, which worked great both for the first dance (everybody had a good view of the couple), and for the toasts. The speeches were one of the most emotional moments of the day:

The bride’s mother and sister as well as the groom’s friend and brother all gave speeches after dinner. It was so special to be surrounded by our loved ones (our wedding planner, Abril, brought our vision of a long table to life beautifully), and during the speeches, there was no shortage of laughter or tears.

The reception party that followed, was one of the unforgettable ones, with the couple and their friends and family not leaving the dance floor for hours (and with some decent “perreo” going on). It even made me forget we were photographing a “micro wedding” party because it felt like a “BIG wedding” party :)

4 Tips for planning your destination beach wedding in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca and Mexico in general:

  • Do some scouting. Most of the weddings here on the coast are destination weddings, and the couples come from other parts of Mexico and the world to celebrate their love here. Puerto Escondido is different from many other beach wedding locations even within Mexico. Come to the location before your wedding, meet your vendors, check out the venue and make sure you see/hear/touch everything and this way feel that this is right what you want.

  • Consider the heat factor: while picking your outfits and choosing the best season. Yes, we love going to the beach for vacations. However, getting married on the beach in Mexico is a different story. Especially for guys who love tuxes :) Especially in the south of Oaxaca where the closer you get to April and May, the higher the temperature and humidity levels are. Linen and lighter colors make it a bit easier to handle it. However, January or February are the best season for a beach destination wedding on the beach in Mexico, so consider it while you’re planning!

  • Trust your team:

Our advice is to trust the professionals. Yes, have your ideas (make your Pinterest board or whatever), but listen to Alex and the rest of your team. Remember that you hired them for a reason! Alex and Abril (our wedding planner) have done many MANY weddings in Puerto Escondido. Really, they’ve seen it all. If you work WITH them, your wedding is sure to be a special event—with incredible photos that you will treasure forever.

  • Enjoy the process. At the end of the day, it’s one of the best days of your life! And you’re spending it on the beach with your loved ones. So although the wedding planning has some stress involved, and some things might go differently from planned, the main goal is to celebrate your love and enjoy it to the fullest.
